The Illusive One Million Annual Housing Units, 2021-2025
Viable Option for Bridging the Gap
This Policy Brief draws from a NISER Study on Bridging the Housing Gap in Nigeria: The Local Content Approach Option.
To provide housing for all Nigerians, the Federal Government planned to supply one million affordable housing units annually during the 2021-2025 national development plan period. Considering that only 1,033 housing units were provided in 1992-2021, the persistence of a huge gap in housing demand and supply is likely to remain at the end of the 2021-2025 development plan period. Yet, Target 11.1 under the SDGs directly calls for adequate, safe, and affordable housing for all by 2030.
This policy brief examines the dilemma of the huge gap between housing demand and supply and recommends viable options for bridging the gap.
