SEX-FOR-GRADES UNDERMINES ETHICAL AND ACADEMIC STANDARDS: What are the Options for Universities in Nigeria?
This Policy Brief draws from a NISER Study on Combating “Sex for Grades” in Nigerian Universities.
In addition to compromising ethical standards and human dignity, the poor quality of some graduates in Nigeria could be traced to the prevailing sex-for-grades in universities. In realisation of the dangers sex-for-grades poses, many universities have developed comprehensive policies to control the phenomenon. For example, the University of Ibadan has a comprehensive “Sexual Harassment Policy” dating back to 2012. Despite such efforts by many universities across the country, incidents of sex-for-grade persist, which suggests that it is a complex problem that requires a multifaceted approach to controlling it. Drawing from a NISER study, this policy brief contributes to understanding and addressing the phenomenon.
