On June 27, 2024, NISER hosted the general public and relevant stakeholders at the 5th edition of Actualizing Behaviour Change [ABC] Series, with the theme, ‘A Gender-lensed view into Citizens’ Lived Experiences of Corrupt Behaviour in Nigeria’. Thus hybrid event, which was held both on-site at the NISER Conference Room and online, reviewed the results of a nationwide survey of over 2500 citizens on their experiences of corrupt behaviour, from the perspective of gender, bringing the implications of the findings up for discussion.
The results of the study, presented by Dr. Temitayo Adeyemo (Lecturer, Department of Agricultural Economics, University of Ibadan) showed that while both male and female citizens experienced corrupt behaviour, bribery was the major factor experienced by males, while abuse of office was experienced most by females. These engendered feelings of anger, fear and disgust among citizens.
The panel discussions featured Amb. Dr. Safiya Ahmad Nuhu (Director, Centre for Gender Studies, Bayero University, Kano), Prof Janice Olawoye (Director, Kings International College, Moniya, Ibadan), Hauwa Shaffi Nuhu (Managing Editor, HumAngle Media), and Kikanwa Enoabasi Onyema (Hall Chairperson, Adetoun Ogunseye Postgraduate Hall, University of Ibadan), as they shared insights on addressing the gender-based issues that came to light at the event. Invited guests from diverse organizations also contributed to the discussions.
The ABC Series is a periodic knowledge sharing platform organized by the Behaviour Change Knowledge Centre, with grant support from the MacArthur Foundation.
